This is insane.
Former Representative Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) reiterated her concerns regarding Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) on Friday, emphasizing that if he were to be chosen as the Speaker, it would likely result in the Republican Party losing control of the House in the upcoming election, and, in her view, they would be deserving of such an outcome.
According to The Hill, in a statement posted on a social media platform, Cheney expressed her belief that nominating Jordan as Speaker would be a disregard for the Constitution, ultimately leading to the loss of the House majority, which she suggested would be a fitting consequence.
Cheney also underscored her apprehensions about Jordan’s close ties to former President Trump and his involvement in attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, characterizing them as a conspiracy to maintain Trump in power. She specifically noted Jordan’s advocacy for Vice President Pence to reject the lawful electoral votes.
Jordan officially reentered the Speaker race after previously losing the GOP nomination to House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) in a vote earlier in the week. Scalise subsequently withdrew from the race due to insufficient support from fellow party members. Georgia Republican Representative Austin Scott also announced his candidacy for the Speaker position on the same day, with a commitment to lead a House that prioritizes the best interests of the American people.
During a speech last week, Cheney expressed doubt about Jordan’s ability to secure enough votes to become Speaker. However, she warned that if he were to succeed, it would effectively undermine the defense of the Constitution by a group of elected Republicans.
Cheney further accused Jordan of having superior knowledge of Donald Trump’s plans for January 6, asserting that he was deeply involved in Trump’s efforts to overturn the election results.
As the vice chair of the Jan. 6 select committee, Cheney co-authored a report with the committee that designated Jordan as a “significant player” in Trump’s endeavors to challenge the election results. The report disclosed Jordan’s participation in multiple post-election meetings to strategize on overturning the results, including a January 2, 2021, call with Trump and others to discuss delaying the joint session scheduled for January 6th.
The report also cited a text message from Jordan to then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on January 5, 2021, in which Jordan conveyed his advice that Vice President Mike Pence should “call out all the electoral votes that he believes are unconstitutional as no electoral votes at all.”
