Trump called Biden’s DOJ weaponized and now the media is calling the Trump DOJ weaponized.
CNN’s senior legal analyst, Elie Honig, recently raised alarms about the Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ) facing a serious crisis following the move to drop criminal charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Writing for New York Magazine, Honig described the situation as an “existential crisis” for the DOJ, accusing the department of turning a blind eye to justice for political reasons.
Honig took aim at Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, criticizing him for justifying the decision to dismiss charges against Adams purely on political grounds. He praised former Acting U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon and her team for resisting Bove’s directive, standing firm in the pursuit of justice. However, he expressed frustration with the lack of leadership and accountability, wondering where figures like former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi were in holding the DOJ accountable for this politically motivated decision.
Honig warned that if political considerations start influencing prosecution decisions, it could set a dangerous precedent. He painted a disturbing picture: A governor charged with tax fraud who supports a Democratic president’s anti-gun agenda could be let off the hook, or a senator involved in bribery could avoid prosecution because of their support for Republican foreign aid cuts. He also described a scenario where a police officer accused of misconduct might have charges dropped to support a president’s anti-drug agenda.
Ultimately, Honig argued that while politics is a natural part of governance, the justice system must remain impartial. He cautioned that if the DOJ becomes a tool of political maneuvering, it would undermine the integrity of the rule of law, turning the department into a mere extension of political power with agents wielding handcuffs and firearms.
Honig’s warning is echoed by other conservative voices, including Andy McCarthy, who has condemned the DOJ for using the legal system to settle political scores, particularly in relation to the Trump administration’s dealings with the Adams case. The situation has sparked growing concern among those who believe the DOJ’s credibility is on the line.
