On Thursday, the Army stood firm in its support for the Arlington National Cemetery staff member involved in the recent dispute during former President Trump’s wreath-laying ceremony. The staffer had been enforcing the cemetery’s strict regulations against political activities when they were reportedly pushed aside, prompting a response from law enforcement.
An Army spokesperson affirmed that the employee acted with utmost professionalism in maintaining the cemetery’s decorum and chose not to pursue charges against the individuals involved. “The incident was unfortunate, but the employee’s conduct was in line with the dignity expected at Arlington National Cemetery,” the spokesperson remarked. The Army has since declared the matter resolved.
The controversy emerged after NPR reported an altercation between Trump’s campaign staff and a cemetery employee. The employee had been working to prevent unauthorized filming and photography in Section 60, a dedicated area for veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. This area is protected by federal law to prevent political exploitation, and the employee’s actions were aimed at preserving its solemnity.
Trump’s visit, which included Gold Star families of the 13 U.S. service members who died in the Kabul airport bombing in 2021, was held on the third anniversary of the attack. Despite claims by Trump’s campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung that they had permission for a photographer and that the staffer in question had acted inappropriately, the Associated Press reported that the campaign was explicitly warned against taking photos in Section 60.
Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio), defended the campaign’s actions and dismissed criticisms, expressing frustration with what he described as unfair treatment. Vance, a Marine veteran, stated at a rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, that there was clear evidence the campaign had been authorized to have a photographer and criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for her comments on the incident.
The Army’s emphasis remains on upholding the cemetery’s revered traditions and ensuring that public ceremonies are conducted with the highest level of respect for those honored there.
