Former President Donald Trump made an unexpected appearance at Knockout Barber in The Bronx last Thursday, marking his second visit to the area as the 2024 presidential election approaches. The visit, part of an upcoming segment for “Fox & Friends,” caught co-owner Javier Rodriguez off guard.
“This came out of nowhere,” Rodriguez stated, reflecting on the surprise of having Trump in his shop. He noted that while the initial shock was palpable, Trump quickly lightened the mood, sharing jokes and engaging with patrons. “As he walked through, everyone shook his hand. He made us feel at ease,” Rodriguez added.
Although the conversations were kept private, Rodriguez mentioned they discussed local topics, including schools. Despite being a registered Democrat, he has voted for Trump in both the 2016 and 2020 elections but has yet to decide on his choice for November. “I’ll make that decision at the ballot,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of informed voting.
In contrast, Rodriguez’s father, Javier Rodriguez Sr., expressed unwavering support for Trump. A former barber shop owner himself, he plans to vote for Trump again, citing dissatisfaction with the current Democratic leadership and appreciation for Trump’s economic policies. “I like his approach to the economy. He focuses on lowering taxes, which is something we need,” he said.
Outside the shop, a diverse crowd of supporters and protesters gathered to catch a glimpse of the former president. Supporters waved signs, including one that read “Make Barbers Great Again.” To ensure Trump’s safety—following two recent assassination attempts—Secret Service agents set up a tent over the entrance.
Trump’s visit is part of a broader strategy to engage with traditionally Democratic voters. Recent polling indicates he is making significant strides with black and Hispanic communities, a notable shift for Republican candidates. Historical data shows Trump won just 8% of the black vote in 2016 but improved to 12% against Biden in 2020, and recent polls suggest even higher numbers for the upcoming election.
As the election draws nearer, Trump’s efforts to connect with voters in places like The Bronx underscore his determination to broaden his appeal, even in a state where he is not expected to win. However, his campaign’s focus on economic issues and tax policies may resonate with many, regardless of party affiliation, as he seeks to reshape the electoral landscape in 2024.
