Trump Gets Surprising Foreign Support

Peter Mandelson, the incoming British Ambassador to the U.S., recently shared his perspective on President-elect Donald Trump’s upcoming administration, predicting that it will be one of the most “consequential” in recent history. In an op-ed for Fox News, Mandelson emphasized the importance of the United States’ allies adapting to the clear message sent by the American people through the 2016 election. He stressed that America’s partners must recalibrate their alliances to align with U.S. interests, particularly in national security, economic growth, and foreign policy.

Mandelson, who is set to replace Dame Karen Pierce as the U.K.’s top diplomat to the U.S., expressed his belief that the U.S.-U.K. relationship, built on decades of cooperation, has significant potential for growth. He pointed out the importance of strengthening the national security partnership between the two nations, particularly in light of new global threats. The U.K., he noted, has been a strong advocate for NATO allies to increase defense spending, an issue that became even more pressing after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While applauding the U.K.’s efforts, Mandelson acknowledged that the U.S. has every right to ask if European nations can do more to ease America’s financial burden in global defense.

Mandelson also praised Trump for his “straight-talking” and “deal-making” instincts, which he argued could inject a sense of urgency and entrepreneurial thinking into foreign policy. He urged allies to see this as an opportunity to tackle foreign policy challenges with real-world solutions. On the global stage, Mandelson highlighted the increasing threats posed by China and Iran. He warned that the West must not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons and expressed concern over China’s growing global influence, which he sees as a direct challenge to Western values.

In closing, Mandelson suggested that the U.K., as one of America’s closest allies, is ready to embrace new ways of tackling global challenges. Together, the U.S. and U.K. can protect their citizens, foster economic growth, and build opportunities for future generations.
