Trump Blames High Egg Prices On Who?

President Donald Trump is taking legal action against California over what his administration calls unconstitutional egg regulations—rules that may have helped drive up egg prices for American families already struggling with inflation.

Trump Sues California Over Soaring Egg Prices

On Wednesday, the Trump administration filed a federal lawsuit challenging California’s controversial ballot initiatives passed in 2008 and 2018. These laws require that all eggs sold in California must come from cage-free hens, regardless of where the eggs are produced.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said in a statement:

“It’s bad enough when California hurts its own economy. But when it punishes farmers and families across all 50 states, President Trump will not sit back and allow that overreach to go unchecked.”

California’s Cage-Free Mandate Blamed for Nationwide Impact

Conservatives say the laws have forced farmers across the country to adopt costly production practices, which has contributed to a dramatic increase in egg prices nationwide.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average cost of a dozen Grade A eggs peaked at $6.23 in March, then dropped to $5.12 in April and $4.55 in May—yet prices remained almost 70% higher compared to the same time last year.

Trump: ‘California Is Driving Prices Through the Roof’

The lawsuit argues that California’s liberal agenda is interfering with interstate commerce and violating the Constitution by regulating food production outside its borders.

“This is yet another example of how out-of-control progressive policies hurt everyday Americans,” said Attorney General Pam Bondi. “Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, we’re standing up to defend farmers, reduce food costs, and restore common sense.”

California Fights Back, But Questions Remain

California officials insist bird flu outbreaks are the primary cause of rising egg prices, not their animal welfare laws. But critics argue the timing and scale of the price spike point directly to supply disruptions caused by regulation, not disease.

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office mocked the lawsuit online, calling Trump’s action “yet another attempt to blame California for his failures.” But voters, especially seniors on fixed incomes, aren’t laughing.

Industry Caught in the Middle

Groups like the American Egg Board say they’ll comply with California’s law but are watching the lawsuit closely. Farmers, they say, have worked hard to adapt—but at great cost.

“Egg producers are trying to keep up with changing consumer demand and shifting regulations,” the board said. “We appreciate the administration’s support in addressing inflation and stabilizing egg supply.”

Conservative Critics Say Enough Is Enough

For many, the battle over egg regulations is part of a larger war on big-government mandates that drive up costs for working families and seniors.

“Whether it’s gas, groceries, or eggs, Americans are paying more because of liberal policy failures,” Bondi said. “We need leadership that puts our families first—and President Trump is doing just that.”
