In a brazen show of force, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the largest missile and drone assault since the Ukraine war began, just hours after speaking directly with President Donald Trump. The scale and timing of the attack have many wondering: Was this Putin’s way of publicly rebuking America’s strongest leader?
Russia Unleashes 550 Strikes After Trump Call
According to Ukrainian military officials, Russia fired over 550 drones and missiles during the overnight onslaught, targeting cities across Ukraine including Kyiv. Residential buildings were struck, cars were set ablaze, and even ambulance vehicles were destroyed.
At least one civilian was killed, and two dozen others were injured, including 12 hospitalized, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed.
This came less than 24 hours after Trump’s high-stakes phone call with Putin.
Zelensky Links Attack to Trump-Putin Call
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that the air raid sirens began almost simultaneously with news of Trump’s call to Moscow. In a blunt message on X, Zelensky accused the Kremlin of deliberately escalating violence:
“Once again, Russia shows it does not want peace—it wants terror,” Zelensky wrote.
Russia’s defense ministry also claimed it intercepted 48 Ukrainian drones—a signal that the battlefront is still heating up.
Trump: “Putin Is Not Ready to Stop This War”
President Trump did not mince words in his reaction.
“I’m very disappointed with the conversation I had with President Putin,” he told reporters Thursday evening. “I don’t think he’s willing to stop, and that’s too bad.”
Trump’s blunt tone signals a growing frustration with Putin’s unwillingness to end the conflict, despite months of efforts by the former—and likely future—Commander-in-Chief to broker peace in Eastern Europe.
Trump, Zelensky Coordinate New Defense Strategy
The next morning, President Trump spoke with Ukrainian leader Zelensky, who described the call as “important and fruitful.” The two discussed immediate threats and plans to strengthen air defenses through joint U.S.-Ukraine defense cooperation, including potential partnerships in drone and missile technology production.
Zelensky added:
“We are ready for direct projects with the United States. This is vital for our long-term security.”
Pentagon Halts Some Weapon Deliveries — Trump Responds
The calls came amid revelations that the U.S. Department of Defense has paused shipments of key air defense systems to Ukraine, citing concerns over depleted U.S. military stockpiles.
Trump sharply criticized the Biden administration’s reckless approach:
“We’re helping Ukraine, but Biden drained our own military first,” Trump said. “We need to rebuild and protect our country, too.”
Putin Sends a Message of Defiance
According to Kremlin sources, Putin did not acknowledge the U.S. weapons pause during his call with Trump. His aide, Yuri Ushakov, claimed that Russia remains open to talks—but gave no indication of backing down from its aggressive goals in Ukraine.
Why This Matters:
This latest development underscores a dangerous truth: The Biden administration’s weakness on the global stage is emboldening America’s enemies, while President Trump continues leading from the front—even out of office.
