California Governor Gavin Newsom is making headlines again — and not for anything that helps struggling Californians. This time, the Democrat is spearheading a controversial scheme to rewrite political maps in his deep-blue state in a direct attempt to block President Donald Trump’s influence in next year’s midterm elections.
A Direct Attack on Trump’s Redistricting Push
At a high-profile Los Angeles event with top Democrats, Newsom rolled out his plan to counter Republican efforts in Texas to secure up to five GOP-friendly congressional seats. Trump has pushed for the Texas redistricting move as part of a national strategy to expand the GOP’s razor-thin House majority in 2026.
But instead of focusing on California’s failing infrastructure, surging crime, and mass exodus of residents, Newsom is targeting Trump. “Donald Trump, you have poked the bear and we will punch back,” he bragged, promising to “meet fire with fire” through an unusual mid-decade redistricting of California’s congressional map.
Mocking Trump While Grabbing Power
In a social media post that mimicked Trump’s signature style, Newsom wrote: “DONALD TRUMP MISSED THE DEADLINE! CALIFORNIA WILL NOW DRAW NEW, MORE BEAUTIFUL MAPS—THEY WILL BE HISTORIC!”
Critics say this is nothing more than a partisan power grab. The National Republican Congressional Committee blasted Newsom for being willing to “shred California’s Constitution” just to help Democrats cling to power.
A Steep Climb for Newsom’s Plan
Unlike Texas, where Republicans can act quickly, California’s constitution requires a two-thirds vote in the Democrat-controlled legislature to place such a change on the ballot. Newsom’s scheme would temporarily dismantle the state’s widely respected independent redistricting commission — created to keep politicians from manipulating districts for their own gain.
Former Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who helped establish the commission in 2008 and 2010, has strongly opposed Newsom’s proposal, warning that it undermines fairness in elections.
The Real Goal? Energizing Anti-Trump Voters
Political experts believe Newsom’s real motive is to rally Democrat voters who despise Trump, while boosting his own national profile ahead of a likely 2028 presidential run. The move also doubles as a massive fundraising opportunity for Democrats in California.
Newsom insists his plan is “transparent” and “temporary,” but many Californians aren’t buying it. With the state’s independent redistricting commission still enjoying broad public support, convincing voters to hand political map-making back to politicians could be the biggest political gamble of Newsom’s career.
