A Feud Brews Between Two Powerhouses Over Debt, Subsidies, and the Future of America
Tensions between President Donald J. Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk reached a boiling point this week following the Senate’s passage of the controversial One Big Beautiful Bill Act—a multi-trillion-dollar spending package that has sparked outrage from fiscal conservatives and tech innovators alike.
Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, broke ranks with Trump in a very public fashion, calling the president’s remarks “just plain wrong” and “so disappointing” after Trump floated the idea of possibly revoking Musk’s U.S. citizenship—despite Musk having become a naturalized citizen back in 2002.
🚨 A Billionaire Threatens to Break Away
The dispute stems from Trump’s massive legislative win: a bill that raises the U.S. debt ceiling by $5 trillion, delivers significant tax cuts, and boosts funding for border security and the military. But the bill also slashes green energy subsidies—something that struck a nerve with Musk, who has invested billions into clean technology and innovation.
On X (formerly Twitter), Musk didn’t hold back:
“If this reckless spending bill becomes law, the America Party will launch immediately. This nation deserves a real alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty—so the people can finally have a true voice.”
🇺🇸 Trump Fires Back: “Maybe Elon Should Head Home to South Africa”
President Trump fired off a blunt response on Truth Social, taking aim at the enormous federal subsidies Musk’s companies have received for years:
“Take away the subsidies, and Elon might have to shut everything down and return to South Africa. No more rockets, no more electric vehicles. America would save an enormous amount of money.”
When a reporter asked if he might consider deporting Musk, Trump replied, “I’m not sure—we’ll have to look into it.”
💬 Musk Responds: “So Disappointing”
Musk’s response was swift and sharp. On X, he posted:
“Just plain wrong. So disappointing.”
The fallout is significant given Musk’s previous support for Trump’s 2024 campaign—contributing over $250 million in support. But Musk says the One Big Beautiful Bill is a betrayal of conservative principles, calling it:
- “Utterly insane”
- “Political suicide”
- “Destructive to innovation”
⚠️ What’s in the Bill? And Why Are Conservatives Worried?
The legislation includes:
- A $5 trillion increase to the national debt ceiling
- Historic tax cuts
- Increased military and border security spending
- Cuts to food subsidies and ACA health benefits
- Deep reductions in clean energy incentives
The Congressional Budget Office warns the bill could add $3.3 trillion to the federal deficit over the next 10 years.
Musk has emphasized that while he supports tax cuts and border enforcement, bankrupting the country isn’t the solution.
“I simply don’t want to see America go broke,” Musk posted. “If we keep increasing the debt ceiling, what’s the purpose of having one at all?”
🕵️ Trump Calls for Investigation into Musk’s Government Deals
Trump also suggested that DOGE—the Department of Government Efficiency, which Musk briefly headed—should investigate the federal funds awarded to Musk’s companies:
“Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history… BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!”
🔥 Conservative Backlash and Shifting Alliances
Many Trump supporters on X were stunned by his comments.
A Tesla owner from Minnesota posted:
“This is actually one of the dumbest posts I’ve seen Trump make.”
Musk responded simply:
“So disappointing.”
Even Senator Lisa Murkowski—who voted for the bill—admitted the legislation isn’t perfect:
“My hope is that the House is gonna look at this and recognize that we’re not there yet.”
Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer gloated:
“Republicans are in shambles because they know the bill is so unpopular.”
🧭 The Road Ahead: Will Musk Form a New Party?
Whether Musk truly follows through on launching an “America Party” remains to be seen. But the growing divide between Trump and Musk signals deeper fractures in the conservative movement—particularly when it comes to fiscal policy, innovation, and the role of government in the economy.
For older conservatives who care deeply about America’s financial future, rising debt and bloated spending are red flags—not victories.
One thing’s for sure: The fight for America’s future is far from over.
