Biden Surprisingly Surges Ahead Of Trump

In a recent national poll conducted by ABC News/Ipsos, President Biden holds a slight lead over former President Trump among likely voters, with a margin of 4 percentage points. According to the findings, 49 percent of likely voters expressed support for Biden in a hypothetical match-up against Trump, who garnered 45 percent backing. However, the race tightens considerably when considering all adults and registered voters.

Among all adults surveyed, Trump holds a narrow lead over Biden, with 46 percent of respondents favoring him compared to Biden’s 44 percent. However, Biden edges ahead when focusing on registered voters, securing 46 percent support against Trump’s 45 percent.

The poll also reveals potential challenges for Trump, particularly regarding his ongoing legal issues. A significant portion of Trump’s supporters—80 percent—indicate they would continue to support him even if he were convicted in the New York case. However, 16 percent admit they would reconsider their support, with an additional 4 percent stating they would withdraw their backing.

Furthermore, Trump maintains an edge over Biden in terms of perceived economic competence. 46% of respondents trust Trump to handle the economy, while only 32 percent express the same level of trust in Biden. Similarly, on the issue of inflation, 44 percent of Americans trust Trump, whereas only 30 percent trust Biden.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll, conducted online and encompassing 2,260 adults, took place from April 25 to April 30. The margin of sampling error for the poll stands at 2 percentage points.

These findings align with other national polls, indicating a narrow race among the two frontrunners. The Hill/Decision Desk HQ’s national polling average for match-up also depicts Joe Biden and Donald Trump each receiving approximately 45 percent support, further underlining the competitive nature of the current political landscape.
