Trump Defeats Newsom, Kamala Again

President Donald Trump continues to outperform several top Democratic figures in national popularity, according to newly released polling data — reinforcing his powerful presence in American politics even years after his historic return to the White House.

A new NBC News national poll shows Trump maintaining a noticeable advantage over two Democrats frequently mentioned as possible contenders in the 2028 presidential election: former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The numbers highlight a political reality many analysts have been noting for months — Trump remains one of the most dominant figures in modern American politics.

New Poll Shows Trump Leading Democratic Rivals

According to the survey, 41 percent of respondents hold a favorable view of President Trump, putting him comfortably ahead of both Harris and Newsom.

The poll found:

  • Donald Trump: 41% favorable
  • Kamala Harris: 34% favorable
  • Gavin Newsom: 27% favorable

While Harris and Newsom are frequently discussed as possible Democratic presidential candidates in 2028, the new data suggests neither has yet built the national support needed to challenge Trump’s enduring influence.

Political strategists say the numbers demonstrate how strongly Trump continues to resonate with voters — particularly among older Americans concerned about the economy, border security, and America’s role in the world.

Kamala Harris Fuels 2028 Speculation

Harris has recently fueled speculation about another presidential run following her 2024 election loss to Trump.

The former vice president revived her KamalaHQ social media operation and released a book reflecting on the campaign — moves that many political observers see as early positioning for a future run.

During a podcast interview earlier this year, Harris acknowledged that she has not ruled out another bid for the White House, saying she “might” consider entering the race.

Harris also reportedly weighed running for governor of California after Newsom’s term ends but ultimately decided against launching that campaign.

Newsom Positions Himself as a Trump Critic

Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom has emerged as one of the most vocal critics of the Trump administration.

Newsom has repeatedly clashed with Trump on issues ranging from immigration enforcement to federal disaster funding. Despite his national media profile, however, the latest polling indicates he still faces significant hurdles building broader support among voters nationwide.

Newsom has suggested that any decision about running for president would depend heavily on discussions with his family.

Because California governors are term-limited, Newsom will eventually need to decide whether to pursue another political path once his time in Sacramento ends.

Potential Republican Successors Still Trail Trump

The poll also measured support for two Republicans often mentioned as possible future leaders of the GOP: Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance.

Both men posted solid numbers but still trailed behind Trump’s popularity.

The survey found:

  • J.D. Vance: 38% favorable
  • Marco Rubio: 34% favorable

Neither Republican has announced plans to run in 2028, but Trump previously suggested that the two could form a powerful ticket if they ever chose to campaign together.

“The two of them together would be unstoppable,” Trump said in earlier remarks, though he declined to say who should lead such a ticket.

Trump Keeps Future Options Open

President Trump has also been asked in the past whether he would consider seeking a third term in office, something that would require a constitutional amendment.

While Trump has not seriously pursued the idea, he has occasionally joked about it while pointing to strong support from voters.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One last year, Trump said he had not given the idea much thought but noted that his polling numbers remain strong.

“We have some very good people,” Trump said. “But I have the best poll numbers that I’ve ever had.”

Poll Methodology

The NBC News poll was conducted between February 27 and March 3 and surveyed 1,000 adults nationwide.

The survey carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

While early polling does not predict future election outcomes, the results offer a snapshot of the current political landscape — and show that President Trump continues to hold a commanding position in the national conversation heading toward the next election cycle.
