President Donald Trump announced Friday that longtime ally Richard Grenell will step down from his leadership role at the Trump-Kennedy Center, as the historic performing arts venue prepares for a major multi-year renovation.
Grenell has been serving as interim executive director of the Trump-Kennedy Center, helping oversee daily operations and major organizational changes at the iconic Washington, D.C. cultural institution.
While Grenell is stepping away from the executive director role, the Trump administration confirmed that he will remain involved with the center as an unpaid consultant, continuing to advise leadership as the facility prepares for its large-scale reconstruction.
Leadership Change at the Trump-Kennedy Center
President Trump said Matt Floca, currently the venue’s vice president of facilities operations, is expected to take over leadership responsibilities moving forward.
Floca is expected to take on the roles of chief operating officer and executive director once the center’s board of directors gives final approval.
Trump praised Floca’s work in a post on Truth Social, highlighting his role in preparing the venue for its next chapter.
“Matt has played a key role in helping move the Center forward and raising its standards to the highest level,” Trump wrote.
The president also thanked Grenell for guiding the organization during a critical transition period.
“Ric Grenell has done an excellent job helping coordinate many important elements of the Center,” Trump said. “I want to thank him for the outstanding work he has done.”
Trump added that once renovations are complete, the venue will become “the finest facility of its kind anywhere in the world.”
According to reports, Trump—who also serves as chairman of the Trump-Kennedy Center board—is expected to attend a board meeting at the White House on Monday where the leadership transition will be formally discussed.
Trump’s Vision for American Arts and Culture
When Grenell was first selected to lead the center, Trump said the diplomat shared his broader goal of promoting a renewed era of American arts and culture.
The president has repeatedly described the effort as part of a wider push to restore what he calls a “Golden Age of American Arts.”
Trump has also spoken openly about the type of programming he believes should be highlighted at the venue moving forward.
His administration has emphasized a focus on celebrating American culture, history, and artistic excellence.
Major Changes to the Kennedy Center
Shortly after beginning his second term in office, Trump moved to reshape the leadership of the historic arts institution.
The president removed board members who had been appointed during the previous administration and replaced them with new members aligned with his cultural vision. The board later voted to name Trump chairman of the organization.
More recently, the board approved a decision to rename the famous Washington, D.C. performing arts venue the Trump-Kennedy Center, marking one of the most significant changes in the institution’s history.
The move sparked debate in the entertainment world, with some performers canceling scheduled appearances following the leadership and policy changes.
Massive Renovation Project Planned
Despite the controversy, the center is now preparing for what Trump described as a historic renovation project designed to transform the venue into a world-class cultural destination.
Last month, the president announced that the facility will close for approximately two years beginning July 4 to allow construction crews to complete major upgrades and structural improvements.
Trump also shared architectural renderings showing the vision for the updated building.
“The Trump Kennedy Center will undergo a full reconstruction starting after the July 4th celebration, with plans to reopen the newly renovated venue in about two years,” Trump said.
Supporters say the renovation will modernize the venue while helping restore national pride in American arts and culture.
