A shocking new clash at the southern border is making national headlines after Democratic Rep. Adelita Grijalva of Arizona claimed she was pepper-sprayed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers during a federal raid in Tucson. But ICE officials say the story is completely wrong — and they’re pushing back hard.
Grijalva posted an emotional video on X describing what she says happened outside a local Tucson restaurant on Friday morning. According to her account, nearly 40 ICE agents — some masked and operating from unmarked vehicles — were conducting a major operation when local activists formed a crowd to block their path.
Grijalva claims she approached the agents for answers and was “sprayed in the face” and “pushed around,” insisting she was simply seeking clarification “as a member of Congress.”
But federal officials say the Democrat is rewriting the incident.
DHS: Grijalva’s Pepper-Spray Claim “Not True”
Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin issued a direct rebuttal, saying Grijalva was not pepper-sprayed and was never targeted by agents. According to DHS, the congresswoman was only near another individual who obstructed ICE and assaulted officers — prompting lawful use of force.
“If her claims were true, it would be a medical marvel. But they’re not,” McLaughlin said. “Identifying yourself as a ‘member of Congress’ doesn’t give you the authority to interfere with federal law enforcement.”
McLaughlin also revealed that two officers were seriously injured during the confrontation — a detail ignored by Democrat leaders.
What Really Happened at the Restaurant?
Tucson Police confirmed that ICE was serving a federal search warrant at Taco Giro when a crowd gathered, blocking exits and surrounding agents. Police say federal tactical units used “chemical munitions” only after agents became trapped and needed emergency extraction.
This was not random. This was not a street scuffle. This was a federal operation involving suspects tied to an active investigation.
Democratic Leaders Blame Trump Instead of Criminal Suspects
Despite evidence that officers were injured and agents were cornered, Tucson’s Democratic Mayor Regina Romero and Vice Mayor Lane Santa Cruz blamed the Trump administration, accusing ICE of using “disproportionate force.” They criticized agents for wearing tactical gear — even though such gear is standard in operations involving dangerous targets.
Their statement ignored a central fact: ICE was executing a lawful federal warrant.
Grijalva Escalates Rhetoric Against Trump
Rather than address the injured officers or the crowd obstructing a federal raid, Grijalva accused President Trump of having “no regard for the rule of law,” claiming federal agents were “disappearing people from the streets.”
This kind of language echoes far-left talking points, not verified evidence.
Grijalva — who just took office after winning a special election to fill her late father’s seat — has already aligned herself with some of Congress’s most controversial figures. She also became the 218th signer of the bipartisan petition demanding the release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case.
Bigger Questions for Voters
For millions of Americans — especially those concerned about border security, rising crime, and the growing hostility toward law enforcement — this incident raises critical questions:
- Why are Democrat lawmakers interfering with federal officers doing their jobs?
- Why are activist crowds being allowed to obstruct lawful ICE operations?
- And why does the media accept accusations against law enforcement without evidence?
Under President Trump, ICE and Border Patrol have been working under intense pressure as federal agents confront rising illegal crossings and increasingly hostile activism in border communities.
This latest clash shows exactly why the administration argues that strong law enforcement is essential — even when political opponents try to undermine it.
