Nathan Wade, a key figure in the prosecution of former President Trump in Georgia, announced his resignation on Friday following a judicial call for him to step down due to his romantic involvement with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D).
The decision came from Judge Scott McAfee, who deemed the romantic relationship a potential conflict of interest, necessitating Wade’s departure to ensure the integrity of the legal proceedings. Wade, in his resignation letter, cited a commitment to democracy and expediting the case as his reasons for stepping down.
With Wade’s resignation, the case against Trump for alleged election interference can now progress, although a trial date remains pending. Trump, along with several associates, faces charges of racketeering and other offenses related to efforts to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in Georgia during the 2020 presidential election. Trump has pleaded not guilty to these charges.
While Wade’s resignation letter underscored the absence of a proven conflict of interest, Judge McAfee emphasized that the romantic relationship and shared vacations between Wade and Willis created an appearance of impropriety, necessitating one of them to recuse themselves from the case.
In response to Wade’s resignation, Willis acknowledged his professionalism and courage throughout the legal proceedings, expressing gratitude for his dedication to investigating and prosecuting the allegations of election conspiracy.
Despite earlier reservations from Trump’s legal team regarding the judge’s ruling, Trump himself responded to the news of Wade’s resignation, characterizing it as a disgrace on his newly launched social media platform, Truth Social.
Wade’s departure marks a significant development in the ongoing legal saga surrounding the 2020 election, with implications for the trajectory of the case and its ultimate resolution.
