LOS ANGELES — Dr. Mehmet Oz, Director of the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), is sounding the alarm on what he describes as runaway federal healthcare spending, misplaced priorities, and growing waste within the Affordable Care Act (ACA), better known as Obamacare.
During remarks at the Milken Institute Global Conference, Dr. Oz questioned why able-bodied adults—many of whom are not working—are receiving premium taxpayer-funded healthcare, while the most vulnerable Americans face budget cuts and neglect.
“We’re paying 90% of the costs for able-bodied adults, but only 65% for the truly needy—seniors, children, and the disabled,” Oz said. “That’s not just inefficient, it’s unjust.”
Obamacare’s Medicaid Expansion: A Broken System?
Thanks to Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion, over 20 million new enrollees—primarily working-age, childless adults—have entered the program, with Washington footing most of the bill. Critics, including Dr. Oz, say this shift in priorities is punishing hardworking taxpayers and rewarding dependency.
Currently, 10 fiscally responsible states have rejected the expansion, citing ballooning costs and loss of state control. Other states may soon follow, especially if federal funding is reduced—something now being considered as Congress looks to cut $880 billion in spending.
Dr. Oz: Medicaid Waste and Double Billing Are Draining States
In an exclusive Fox News interview, Dr. Oz pointed to billions in waste, including duplicate coverage when individuals move between states. “We’re literally paying for people twice. That’s your tax money—gone,” he said.
He warned that governors across America are growing desperate as Medicaid budgets crowd out education, public safety, and infrastructure. “We’re becoming a healthcare system with a country attached to it,” Oz added. “That’s not who we are.”
Liberal Critics Push Back — But Ignore the Fiscal Reality
Predictably, left-wing academics and Democrat-aligned think tanks are defending the expansion, claiming it helps hospitals and reduces emergency room visits. But as Oz and many budget watchdogs have pointed out, those arguments gloss over the long-term financial crisis Medicaid faces.
Dr. Benjamin Sommers of Harvard, along with others, argue that cutting funding would leave up to 15 million people without coverage. But conservatives say the real issue is misplaced priorities—and an unsustainable system that rewards dependency instead of promoting work and personal responsibility.
The Real Threat: Obamacare’s Hidden Cost to Seniors and Families
While the left frames Medicaid expansion as compassionate, many Americans—especially older adults—are now seeing delayed services, fewer resources, and declining care quality as funding is shifted away from traditional recipients to cover the new, able-bodied class.
Dr. Oz’s warnings echo what fiscal conservatives have long said: government programs must be efficient, accountable, and focused on those truly in need. Not bloated entitlements that reward inaction.
Looking Ahead: Congress May Step In
Any major changes to Medicaid funding will likely require congressional action, but momentum is growing. With Republican leaders seeking meaningful savings and reform, Medicaid expansion under Obamacare is now firmly under the microscope.
For taxpayers, seniors, and families already stretched thin, Dr. Oz’s message is clear: It’s time to take back control of our healthcare system, stop waste, and refocus on helping the truly vulnerable.
