Safety Comes First as Historic Tree is Removed—Plans Underway to Preserve Its Legacy
In a thoughtful decision balancing safety, history, and restoration, President Donald J. Trump has announced the upcoming removal of a nearly 200-year-old magnolia tree on the White House lawn—originally planted with seeds linked to President Andrew Jackson.
The tree, which stands near the White House South Portico, has become structurally unsound. After consulting the Executive Residence staff and the National Park Service, President Trump confirmed that the tree poses a serious safety risk and must be taken down.
“Unfortunately, all things eventually run their course. This tree has become dangerously unstable—especially near the main White House entrance—and for safety reasons, it has to be taken down,” President Trump shared on Truth Social.
He added that the good news is even better: “We are making tremendous enhancements to the White House.”
The replacement will happen next week, with a beautiful new magnolia tree taking its place. Meanwhile, the administration will preserve the wood from the historic tree for what Trump described as “other high and noble purposes.”
A Tree with Presidential Roots
The original magnolia was grown from seeds brought from The Hermitage, the Tennessee home of President Jackson. It was planted in memory of Jackson’s beloved wife, Rachel, who died shortly before he took office.
The tree has stood as a symbol of strength, honor, and presidential legacy. Over the years, White House gardeners and the National Park Service made extensive efforts to preserve the magnolia, including major pruning in 2017.
Unfortunately, the damage has progressed, leaving no choice but to remove it for public and personnel safety.
Honoring the Past, Building the Future
This move reflects the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to restore, protect, and enhance America’s most iconic landmarks. As President Trump continues to revitalize the People’s House, the removal of the aging tree opens the door for renewal while preserving its powerful story.
Patriotic Americans can take comfort in knowing that this piece of living history won’t be forgotten—but will instead live on in new and meaningful ways.
