Former President Donald Trump criticized President Joe Biden’s recent executive action regarding the U.S. southern border during a rally in Nevada on Sunday, calling the move “nonsense.”
Speaking to a crowd of supporters in Las Vegas, Trump claimed Biden’s executive order on the border was encouraging human trafficking and aiding drug dealers. “It’s weak, it’s ineffective, it’s nonsense what he signed,” Trump declared, prompting the crowd to echo his sentiment.
President Biden’s executive action, announced on Tuesday, pertains to asylum seekers at the U.S. southern border. The measure stipulates that when the seven-day average of border crossings exceeds 2,500 at designated entry points, most asylum seekers can be turned away, with certain exceptions in place.
Biden explained on Tuesday that he felt compelled to take executive action after Republicans thwarted efforts to revive a bipartisan border bill. “The Republicans left me no choice but to use executive action to address border crossings,” Biden stated. He further accused former President Trump of influencing Republicans to oppose the bill, suggesting Trump preferred to use the border issue as a political weapon rather than find a solution. “It was a cynical political move and a disservice to the American people who expect us to resolve the issue, not exploit it,” Biden said.
In response, Trump dismissed Biden’s executive order as both “late” and “meaningless,” characterizing it as “a PR stunt.” Trump argued that if Biden genuinely wanted to address the border situation, he should reinstate all of Trump’s border policies. “If Joe Biden truly wanted to stop the invasion, he should immediately reinstate every single border policy of Donald J. Trump,” Trump insisted.
Recent polling data from Nevada, compiled by The Hill and Decision Desk HQ, shows Trump leading Biden in head-to-head matchups, with Trump at 49 percent and Biden at 46 percent. When independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is included, the figures adjust to 43 percent for Trump, 38 percent for Biden, and 9 percent for Kennedy.
