Trump Deportations Cost Taxpayers How Much?

Recent reports reveal that the cost of deportation flights under the Trump administration has soared, far outpacing previous efforts and dramatically increasing taxpayer burden. The new strategy has involved the use of expensive military transport planes, which are far more costly than the typical charter or even first-class commercial flight. In fact, the cost of deporting illegal immigrants has been shown to be more than eight times higher than under past administrations.

When President Trump took office, he wasted no time fulfilling his promise to crack down on illegal immigration. By his second term, the Department of Homeland Security reported the deportation of more than 7,300 individuals within just the first week. The deportation flights, often carried out using C-17 Globemaster III military transport planes, are estimated to cost around $28,500 per flight hour, according to a senior U.S. defense official.

For example, flights to Guatemala, one of the few countries accepting U.S. military aircraft for deportations, have proven exorbitantly expensive. A flight carrying 64 deportees last week cost the American taxpayer approximately $4,675 per person. By comparison, a first-class commercial ticket on a direct flight from El Paso to Guatemala City would only cost around $850.

The situation was no different with the flights to Colombia. Two planned deportation flights from California turned back after encountering resistance from the Colombian government, which insisted on sending its own planes. Had the flights been completed, the cost to taxpayers would have been approximately $769,500 for just two attempts. A round-trip journey on a military transport plane could easily surpass the cost of a business-class commercial ticket, which is typically around $450.

Despite the high costs, President Trump remains committed to his immigration crackdown. White House press secretary Katherine Leavitt recently reiterated that illegal immigrants are criminals, a stance that represents a sharp shift from previous administrations. The Trump administration’s deportation efforts extend beyond border enforcement and are now targeting sanctuary cities—areas that obstruct federal immigration authorities and prevent them from doing their job.

The Trump administration has made clear that it will continue to prioritize the enforcement of immigration laws, even at a steep price. Whether you agree or disagree with the method, there’s no denying the administration is determined to fulfill its promises and secure the border.
