Speaker Johnson Says Kamala Doomed?

With Vice President Kamala Harris selecting Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, the stage for the 2024 presidential election is now set. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-La.) expressed strong confidence in the GOP’s prospects across the board. During an in-depth interview with The Hill in New York City on Tuesday, Johnson underscored his belief that Republicans are on track to achieve a political trifecta this cycle. He suggested that Walz’s inclusion on the ticket could make the path easier for the GOP as they head into the November elections.

Johnson, who made headlines last year with his historic election to Speaker, is optimistic about his chances of retaining the position. He believes that a solid performance in the upcoming November elections will help unify the GOP conference behind his continued leadership. His upbeat outlook is consistent with the optimistic tone he has maintained in recent months as the 2024 election cycle enters a critical phase.

“I like the current matchup,” Johnson remarked, referring to the impact of Walz’s selection. “I’m glad they chose Walz because it means they can’t avoid discussing their record. I don’t think their track record is going to resonate positively with voters.”

He further asserted that despite recent developments, Republicans are poised for significant victories in both the House and Senate. “We were on track for a decisive win before the recent events, and I still believe that trajectory holds,” Johnson stated. “I’m very optimistic about November.”

Currently, Johnson is on an extensive campaign tour across 20 states, aiming to bolster Republican prospects in key battlegrounds and Democratic strongholds alike. This includes visiting districts represented by Republicans in Biden-won areas, such as Reps. Mike Lawler and Anthony D’Esposito in New York, and Rep. Andrew Garbarino, who represents a district narrowly won by Trump.

Johnson has already campaigned in 147 cities across 32 states and plans to visit eight new states during August. From New York, he will travel to Maine’s 2nd Congressional District to support the National Republican Congressional Committee and then to Virginia to campaign with Rep. Jen Kiggans.

The Speaker is confident that every Republican incumbent will secure reelection in November. “New York is crucial for our majority, as are states like California. Our incumbents are running strong campaigns, outperforming their opponents in many respects. They are making a compelling case to their voters,” Johnson said. While he stopped short of predicting exact seat gains, he expects a significant increase in the GOP majority.

Looking ahead, Johnson anticipates a Republican sweep in the Senate and a return of Donald Trump to the White House. He is preparing for a robust first 100 days agenda for Congress if Republicans achieve unified government. Despite projections showing Republicans as the favorites, Johnson is cautious but hopeful, emphasizing a focus on policy over personalities.

In discussing Trump’s campaign strategy, Johnson advised focusing on substantive policy issues rather than personal attacks. He acknowledged recent controversial comments from Trump but reiterated his belief that emphasizing the current administration’s record will be more effective.

Johnson’s commitment to maintaining unity within the GOP is evident as he prepares for potential challenges from conservative members within the party. He anticipates a need for significant support to secure his position as Speaker if Republicans maintain control of the House.

In his personal life, Johnson cherishes time with his family, including his children, and prefers to spend his free time attending their activities rather than indulging in hobbies like golf. His dedication to his family and public service reflects his priorities as he continues his demanding campaign schedule through the summer and fall.
