Republican Group Flips On Trump

Republicans for the Rule of Law has launched a $2 million advertising campaign to challenge former President Trump’s assertion of absolute immunity from prosecution for his actions surrounding the 2020 presidential election.

This campaign features 25 conservatives who emphasize their preference for upholding the rule of law rather than accepting absolute immunity.

In a press release, the group explained that their ad campaign targets 12 states where the immunity argument has less traction, such as Alabama and Texas, as well as states like Georgia and Pennsylvania, which are directly affected by these legal arguments.

The advertisements will run on digital and streaming platforms until June 23, as stated by the organization.

Sarah Longwell, executive director of Republicans for the Rule of Law, remarked, “Our constitutional system is based on legal accountability and equal justice under the law, applicable to all, including presidents and former presidents. Conservatives inherently understand that no individual is above the law. Therefore, we must reject the notion of ‘absolute immunity’.”

In April, the Supreme Court considered whether Trump could claim presidential immunity from criminal prosecution in his federal Jan. 6 case. Trump’s legal team argues that a president should have absolute immunity for official acts performed while in office.

His attorneys assert that these protections should also cover his attempts to contest the transfer of power following his defeat in the 2020 presidential election to President Biden.

The Supreme Court’s ruling on this issue is expected in the near future.

The justices seemed open to the idea of some form of presidential immunity for Trump, which could influence the criminal proceedings against him and potentially delay his trials.

Recently, Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts in a hush money case in New York, marking a significant development in his legal challenges.
