During a House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing on Wednesday, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) engaged in a heated exchange with her colleagues and targeted Hunter Biden, the president’s son. The committee was considering a resolution to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena issued the previous month.
Mace began her remarks by questioning Hunter Biden’s presence at the hearing and accused him of receiving a bribe to attend. She then criticized him for defying a Congressional subpoena, calling him the “epitome of white privilege.” The South Carolina representative insisted that Hunter Biden had no courage to face the committee and suggested he should be arrested immediately.
Amidst the chaos, Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) proposed a vote to allow Hunter Biden to testify in public, leading to a contentious exchange. Mace challenged the interruptions, questioning if women were allowed to speak in the room.
As the situation unfolded, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) condemned the disruptions and called for decorum, urging his colleagues not to act like “nimrods.”
Mace continued her criticism of Hunter Biden, asserting that he is not above the law and accusing him of deliberately breaking it. She questioned Hunter Biden’s motives for refusing a Congressional deposition, characterizing his appearance as a political stunt and a game with the truth.
The House Oversight and Judiciary committees were conducting the hearing as part of the House GOP’s impeachment investigation into President Biden, with Hunter Biden refusing to sit for a closed-door deposition. Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, argued that Republicans were using him to attack his father.
Later in the hearing, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) criticized Mace for invoking “white privilege,” while Mace defended herself, emphasizing her commitment to addressing the inadequacies in the country.
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) concluded the exchange by stating that the issue wasn’t about Hunter Biden’s white privilege but rather his “Democrat privilege.”
