Former Vice President Mike Pence says the vast majority of Republicans—including many strong supporters of President Donald Trump—are backing the current U.S.–Israeli military operation targeting Iran.
In a Thursday interview with NewsNation host Leland Vittert on the program On Balance, Pence made it clear he believes the United States should remain firm in confronting the Iranian regime and finish the mission.
“We need to finish the job once and for all,” Pence said during the interview, emphasizing his support for the operation and the American forces involved.
His comments come as the conflict with Iran continues to dominate headlines and fuel debate about the future of President Trump’s foreign policy strategy.
Pence Says Republicans Strongly Support Trump’s Decision
According to Pence, the Republican base remains firmly behind President Trump’s decision to authorize military action alongside Israel.
While some political commentators and online influencers have raised questions about the strategy, Pence argued that those voices represent only a small portion of the broader conservative movement.
“There may be debates among some commentators and influencers,” Pence explained. “But when you look at the Republican Party—including many who proudly identify as MAGA Republicans—there is overwhelming support for the president and for the brave men and women serving in our armed forces.”
Pence suggested that the perception of division within the GOP is often exaggerated by media coverage and social media debates.
Debate Over Isolationism in Conservative Circles
One of the biggest discussions emerging online involves whether the Iran operation fits within President Trump’s long-standing “America First” foreign policy doctrine.
Some critics have argued that involvement in overseas conflicts contradicts a more isolationist interpretation of the policy.
Pence rejected that argument, saying the United States cannot ignore threats posed by hostile regimes.
“What we’re seeing right now is a rise in isolationist voices online and on the airwaves,” Pence said. “But President Trump chose to reject those voices and take decisive action.”
According to Pence, that decision demonstrates a willingness to use American strength when national security is at stake.
Trump Administration Defends ‘America First’ Strategy
Senior White House officials have also defended the administration’s approach.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller recently addressed the growing debate, explaining that President Trump’s foreign policy is not about isolation but about protecting American interests.
“President Trump believes America’s incredible military strength should be used when necessary to defend our nation,” Miller said.
He argued that the “America First” philosophy means ensuring the United States remains the most powerful and respected nation in the world.
“America First means America will remain the greatest, most unquestioned power on the global stage,” Miller said. “It means defending American lives and standing strong against threats.”
Pence Says Iran Pressure Could Change the Region
Pence also suggested that sustained pressure on Iran could ultimately create political change inside the country.
“If we continue to target the regime’s security infrastructure, it could open the door for the Iranian people to reclaim their country,” Pence said.
He added that a strong response from the United States could help restore global deterrence, something he believes was weakened during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan under former President Joe Biden.
“For America to maintain credibility around the world, we must demonstrate strength and resolve,” Pence said.
The Historical Roots of “America First”
The phrase “America First” has a long history in American politics.
Historians note that similar language was used by former President Woodrow Wilson during his 1916 reelection campaign when he advocated for keeping the United States out of World War I.
Although the U.S. ultimately entered the war in 1917, the slogan has continued to evolve over time.
In modern politics, the phrase has become closely tied to President Trump’s foreign policy approach—one focused on strong borders, national sovereignty, and protecting American interests abroad.
A Major Moment for U.S. Foreign Policy
As tensions with Iran continue to unfold, the debate surrounding America’s role in global conflicts remains a central issue in U.S. politics.
For Pence and many Republican leaders, the priority is clear: support American troops, confront threats to U.S. security, and maintain America’s position as the world’s leading power.
With the situation still developing, the outcome of the current operation could shape both the future of U.S. foreign policy and the broader political conversation heading into the next election cycle.
