A recent throwback from ABC News has resurfaced, bringing an intriguing glimpse into Vice President Kamala Harris’s past. This segment, dating back nearly 30 years, features a young Harris, then a California prosecutor, being questioned about her relationship with Willie Brown, who was then a prominent figure in California politics.
In the 1995 “PrimeTime Live” segment, an off-camera voice asks Harris if she is Brown’s daughter. Harris, caught off guard and standing next to a somewhat preoccupied Brown, promptly responds, “No, I’m not.” This brief interaction has gained renewed attention, especially with Harris preparing for a major debate against former President Donald Trump.
At the time, Harris was in her early 30s, working as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. Brown, who was married and serving as the speaker of the California State Assembly, had begun a relationship with Harris that reportedly started in 1994 and ended in 1995. That year, Brown was elected as the mayor of San Francisco.
The video segment, which profiles Brown and his flamboyant lifestyle, includes footage of Harris celebrating at his mayoral victory speech. Notably, Brown had appointed Harris to two significant state commissions in 1994, a move that is often credited with propelling her political career.
In a 2019 letter to the San Francisco Chronicle, Brown admitted that his influence helped Harris’s career. He acknowledged, “Yes, I may have influenced her career by appointing her to two state commissions,” while also noting he had similarly supported other politicians without personal ties.
Critics, including investigative journalist Peter Schweizer, have scrutinized Harris’s rise in politics, suggesting that her career advancements were linked to Brown’s support. Schweizer has argued that Harris’s actions as San Francisco’s District Attorney, including dropping or reducing sentences in cases against Brown’s associates, were driven by corruption.
In recent discussions, former President Trump has weighed in, claiming familiarity with Brown and suggesting that Brown played a significant role in shaping Harris’s career trajectory. As the debate between Trump and Harris looms, this historical context adds another layer to the ongoing political narrative.
