Tavia and Gracie Hunt, wife and daughter of Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, have expressed their support for Harrison Butker, the team’s kicker, following the backlash from his recent commencement speech about women and family roles.
Butker’s speech, delivered last Saturday at Benedictine College, a Catholic liberal arts institution in Kansas, sparked controversy. During his address, he suggested that many female graduates might be more excited about getting married and having children than about their academic achievements.
This perspective has been met with significant criticism, and even the NFL has distanced itself from Butker’s remarks. However, Tavia and Gracie Hunt have publicly defended him.
Tavia Hunt took to Instagram to share her thoughts, reflecting on her own experience as a stay-at-home mother. She emphasized that she has always encouraged her daughters to pursue education and dreams that honor God.
“Finding a spouse who loves and respects you and raising a family together is one of the greatest blessings in life,” Tavia wrote. She asserted that acknowledging the importance of motherhood and the dedication it requires is not a form of bigotry.
“Many highly educated women choose to dedicate their lives to raising and nurturing their children. Disagreement doesn’t equate to hate; it simply signifies a difference in opinion,” she added.
Gracie Hunt, 25, shared her perspective during a church outreach event in Dallas and in an appearance on “Fox & Friends.” She praised her mother for being able to stay home and provide care during her and her siblings’ formative years.
“I understand not every woman has this choice, but for my family, it was incredibly impactful,” Gracie said. She also expressed respect for Butker and his commitment to his Christian faith and achievements both on and off the field.
In response to the controversy, the NFL issued a statement clarifying that Butker’s views were personal and did not represent the organization. Jonathan Beane, the NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, emphasized the league’s commitment to inclusion and diversity.
During his speech at Benedictine College, Butker claimed that women have been deceived by significant lies.
“How many of you are thinking about the promotions and titles you’ll earn in your careers?” Butker asked the graduates. He suggested that while some may go on to successful careers, many might be more excited about marriage and starting families.
Butker’s remarks have ignited a debate on gender roles and the value of traditional family structures, drawing both support and criticism from various quarters.
