California Governor Gavin Newsom is facing fresh criticism after publicly endorsing Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for reelection — despite growing concerns about the city’s leadership following last year’s devastating wildfires and ongoing problems related to crime, homelessness, and housing costs.
The governor revealed his support during an interview with journalist Peter Hamby of Puck News, where he spoke positively about Bass and their working relationship.
“I’ve known her for years. We’ve had a strong collaborative relationship, and she’s had a remarkable career,” Newsom said. “I believe in her.”
The endorsement immediately sparked debate online, with critics questioning why the governor would back Bass at a time when many residents remain frustrated with the direction of Los Angeles.
Social Media Backlash Grows
Reaction to Newsom’s comments came quickly on social media, where some users suggested the endorsement reflects the close political ties between California’s progressive leaders.
Others argued that Los Angeles voters deserve a broader debate about leadership after years of growing concerns about homelessness, public safety, and rising living costs in the city.
The criticism highlights the increasingly intense political environment surrounding the upcoming mayoral race.
High-Profile Challengers Enter the Race
Mayor Bass is expected to face strong competition as she seeks another term leading America’s second-largest city.
Among the challengers is Spencer Pratt, a conservative commentator and former reality television personality who has recently become more involved in political discussions about California’s direction.
Bass is also facing a challenge from Nithya Raman, a Democratic Socialist and current Los Angeles City Council member known for advocating aggressive housing and progressive policy reforms.
The race is already drawing significant attention as voters weigh competing visions for how the city should address its most pressing challenges.
Policy Disagreements Between Newsom and Bass
Despite his endorsement, Newsom acknowledged that he and Bass have had disagreements on certain policy issues — particularly housing development.
One major disagreement involved SB 79, a state proposal backed by Newsom that would allow significantly denser housing developments in cities across California. Bass opposed the measure, raising concerns about its impact on neighborhoods in Los Angeles.
Still, Newsom said he believes the two leaders can continue working together moving forward.
“We can debate the merits of different policies,” Newsom said. “But we continue to work closely every day, particularly on rebuilding efforts following the Los Angeles fires.”
Focus on Rebuilding After Wildfires
Newsom also emphasized ongoing cooperation with city leaders as Los Angeles continues rebuilding from the destructive wildfires that impacted the region last year.
State and local officials have been working on recovery efforts, infrastructure repairs, and long-term rebuilding plans.
While political disagreements remain, Newsom suggested collaboration will continue as California addresses housing shortages, wildfire recovery, and broader economic challenges.
A Race That Could Shape Los Angeles’ Future
With several prominent candidates entering the race, the upcoming Los Angeles mayoral election is expected to draw national attention.
For many voters, the contest will serve as a referendum on the city’s leadership and its ability to tackle long-standing problems that have dominated local headlines in recent years.
Newsom’s endorsement of Bass may help consolidate support among some Democratic leaders — but it also ensures the race will remain a closely watched political battle in one of the nation’s most influential cities.
