McConnell Finally Does His Job

In a recent interview with The Hill, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (from Kentucky) highlighted what he perceives as a significant issue: the Biden administration’s inability to control the influx of migrants across the southern border. McConnell emphasized that this concern is likely to become a focal point in the upcoming presidential campaign.

While McConnell refrained from commenting directly on the outcome of the special election for New York’s 3rd Congressional District, he noted its significance as a wake-up call for the House GOP, particularly regarding border security. He asserted that President Biden mishandled the situation from the outset, and he anticipates it will have significant repercussions in the presidential race.

McConnell observed a trend in both Senate and House races where candidates from both parties are vying to position themselves as capable of addressing the border crisis effectively. He acknowledged that Democrats might leverage the failure of a bipartisan border security deal, blocked by Republicans, to their advantage in campaigns.

In the recent New York race, former Rep. Tom Suozzi secured victory partly by capitalizing on Republicans’ role in derailing the bipartisan deal aimed at allocating $20 billion for border security.

Despite Democrats’ attempts to seize the narrative on immigration, McConnell remains skeptical of its effectiveness on a national scale, particularly in the presidential election.

The surge in migrant crossings at the southern border during the Biden administration has been significant, with over 800,000 migrants paroled into the country in 2023 alone, compared to an average of 5,600 annually under previous administrations.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released in January indicated a decline in Biden’s approval rating to 38 percent, with immigration emerging as a growing concern among Americans.

McConnell acknowledged internal divisions among Senate Republicans over the border deal proposed by Sen. James Lankford, which he considered a notable success. However, he emphasized that non-incumbent Republican candidates have the liberty to adopt positions that align with their campaign strategies.

In essence, McConnell’s remarks underscore the growing importance of border security as a campaign issue and its potential impact on electoral outcomes at various levels of government.
