The recent news regarding Steve Bannon, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, heading to prison has ignited anger among MAGA supporters, who argue that it underscores a failing judicial system in the United States.
On Thursday, a federal judge mandated Bannon to surrender to prison by July 1 for defying a subpoena from the House of Representatives. This decision allows the Justice Department to enforce Bannon’s four-month prison sentence while he appeals his conviction. Bannon was found guilty by a jury on two counts of contempt of Congress in July 2022 and received his sentence in October 2022.
Former President Trump expressed his outrage on Truth Social, describing the situation as “a Total and Complete American Tragedy” and accusing President Joe Biden’s Justice Department of corruption. Trump lamented, “The unAmerican Weaponization of our Law Enforcement has reached levels of Illegality never thought possible before.”
Representative Matt Gaetz shared his dismay on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “It is with great sadness and anger that we observe the death of the judicial system in America. Steve Bannon sought judicial review of the illegal demands of a runaway congressional committee, unlike any ever comprised. It was literally a matter of first impression. And they’re sending him to prison – not just to torture him but to torture us.”
Bannon was initially held in contempt of Congress in October 2021 for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the January 6 House Committee. The government charged that Bannon had “pursued a bad-faith strategy of defiance and contempt” since receiving the subpoena.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene also voiced her frustration, tweeting, “Steve Bannon is going to prison July 1st because he was held in contempt of Congress by the FAKE Jan 6th Committee that was set up by Nancy Pelosi against House rules. The DOJ is completely corrupt!!”
Gaetz added that he had implored congressional leaders to annul the contempt charges against Bannon and other former Trump officials, including Mark Meadows, Dan Scavino, and Peter Navarro, but lacked the necessary votes. “We need stronger leaders. November can’t come soon enough,” he stated.
Conservative voices used Bannon’s imprisonment to criticize the Biden administration, claiming selective justice. They pointed out others who ignored congressional subpoenas without facing similar consequences. For instance, the popular right-wing account End Wokeness commented, “A judge just sent Steve Bannon to prison for ignoring a congressional subpoena. Hunter did the same thing. No prison. Fauci lied under oath. No prison.”
Nick Sortor, an internet personality, tweeted, “Former Trump advisor Steve Bannon has been ordered to report to prison by July 1 for ‘contempt of Congress.’ Meanwhile, Merrick Garland REFUSES to prosecute people like Hunter Biden, who repeatedly LIED UNDER OATH to Congress. THE BIDEN DOJ IS TOTALLY CORRUPT.”
Podcast host Craig Chamberlin remarked, “When the left says ‘No one is above the law’, what they really mean is ‘None of our political enemies are above our laws’.”
In contrast, progressive commentator Luke Beasley highlighted that Judge Carl Nichols, who revoked Bannon’s bail and ordered him to report to prison, was appointed by Trump in 2019, thereby challenging the narrative of partisan bias. Beasley noted, “Hey MAGA, the federal judge who just ordered Steve Bannon to report to prison was appointed by Trump.”
