House Judiciary Committee Chair, Jim Jordan, a Republican from Ohio, is intensifying the inquiry into potential collaboration between the government and major tech companies to suppress opposing viewpoints. He has issued subpoenas to FBI Director Chris Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland as part of this effort.
According to Newsmax, the official subpoenas were issued on Thursday due to unsatisfactory responses to previous requests for voluntary cooperation and oversight. This information was disclosed in a press release from the House Judiciary Committee.
Since making their initial requests in April, the committee has received limited cooperation. The sole contribution thus far has been a publicly available transcript of a civil deposition involving FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Elvis Chan from the case of Missouri v. Biden.
Missouri v. Biden is a legal case in which the Biden administration is accused of collaborating with major tech companies. This collaboration resulted in a federal judge preventing the Biden administration from maintaining direct communications while the lawsuit, brought by Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri, was ongoing. Senator Schmitt had initiated the lawsuit during his tenure as the state’s attorney general.
Elvis Chan, identified as the FBI liaison with major tech companies, was revealed through the Twitter Files and Jordan’s Facebook Files.
The House Judiciary Committee has discovered evidence during its investigation that contradicts statements made by Agent Chan during his deposition, particularly concerning his interactions with social media platforms.
The committee’s aim is to gain insights that could inform potential legislative measures. These measures might include new statutory restrictions on the Executive Branch’s ability to collaborate with social media platforms and other corporations to control content circulation and user deplatforming. To accomplish this, a comprehensive understanding of the alleged collusion and influence between the federal government and Big Tech companies is crucial.
Subpoenas were sent to FBI Director Chris Wray, who supervises Agent Chan, and Attorney General Merrick Garland, who oversees the Justice Department, including the FBI.
