Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo criticized the recent New York hush money case against Donald Trump, suggesting on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” that the charges were politically motivated due to Trump’s high-profile status and presidential aspirations.
Cuomo, a former Attorney General of New York, argued that the case should never have been pursued, insinuating that if Trump were not a prominent public figure with presidential ambitions, the charges would not have been brought forth. He emphasized his belief in the integrity of the justice system, expressing concern that such politically charged prosecutions undermine public trust.
In late last month’s verdict, Trump was found guilty on 34 counts related to falsifying business records concerning payments made to an adult film star during his 2016 campaign, allegedly to secure her silence about an alleged affair, which Trump denies. Despite the unanimous guilty verdict from the jury, Trump and his supporters have criticized the judicial process, claiming bias in the judge and jury selection.
The prosecution was led by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat, who Trump and his allies accuse of unfairly targeting him ahead of a potential rematch against President Biden. The case has intensified political tensions, with Trump’s allies framing it as a partisan maneuver to hinder his political prospects.
Cuomo, who served as New York’s Attorney General from 2007 before his tenure as governor until 2021, when he resigned amidst allegations of sexual harassment and criticism over his pandemic policies, echoed concerns about the misuse of the justice system for political gain. He cautioned against undermining democracy by manipulating legal proceedings for partisan purposes.
Currently, Trump holds a narrow lead over President Biden in national polling, according to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ’s polling index, indicating a closely contested political landscape as both parties gear up for the upcoming election cycle.
