The White House chose not to provide a direct comment regarding the expected entry of Representative Dean Phillips (D-MN) into the 2024 Democratic presidential primary on Tuesday.
Over the past several months, Phillips has been urging other prominent Democrats to challenge President Joe Biden in the primary, primarily citing concerns about Biden’s age. In recent weeks, he has taken steps towards announcing his own candidacy.
Phillips resigned from his role as co-chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee in early October. Politico recently disclosed that the 54-year-old centrist politician has privately informed fellow lawmakers of his intention to join the race by Friday, which is the deadline for appearing on the primary ballot in New Hampshire.
When asked about Phillips’s anticipated entry into the race, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to comment on whether President Biden had any reaction to the reports. She stated, “I’m going to exercise caution here. I won’t engage in discussions about upcoming electoral politics in 2024.”
Jean-Pierre added, “One thing I can mention outside of that is that we appreciate the congressman’s nearly 100% support for this president as he has pursued crucial legislative priorities for the American people. I just don’t have any information to share regarding the 2024 news.”
