In a major development on Tuesday, Ukraine agreed to a proposal presented by the Trump administration during high-level discussions in Saudi Arabia, marking a crucial step towards securing a ceasefire and ultimately ending the ongoing war with Russia. This breakthrough reflects the administration’s dedication to ending the conflict and restoring stability in Europe.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking alongside National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, confirmed that Ukraine has accepted a 30-day ceasefire offer, which is contingent on Moscow’s agreement. Rubio emphasized the hope that Russia will respond positively, calling it a necessary gesture for peace.
“We’re hopeful that Russia will accept the offer,” Rubio said. “It’s time for the Russians to show goodwill, and the best way to do that is by agreeing to this ceasefire.”
The negotiations come at a critical time. With lives on the line every day, President Donald Trump has decided to immediately lift the suspension on U.S. security aid to Ukraine. Additionally, U.S. intelligence sharing will be renewed, reinforcing America’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.
Rubio highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting that the loss of life continues as long as fighting persists. He underscored that this initial ceasefire is crucial for moving forward with substantive peace talks. “This isn’t just about whether the war will end, it’s about how it will end,” Rubio remarked.
The next phase of negotiations will focus on key issues, such as the return of kidnapped children and prisoners of war. Both delegations have agreed to set up formal negotiating teams to work toward a long-term peace agreement, ensuring Ukraine’s future security.
Waltz also emphasized that European partners would be involved in the peace process, and that further talks will address important matters, including potential mineral deals that will play a significant role in the region’s recovery.
“This is all about achieving peace,” Rubio concluded, underscoring the administration’s unwavering focus on ending the war and securing a better future for Ukraine.
