President Biden recently took aim at former President Donald Trump for his criticisms of the federal response to Hurricane Helene, as Hurricane Milton—a Category 4 storm—was poised to strike Florida’s west coast, with Biden warning it could be the “storm of the century.”
At a press briefing alongside Vice President Kamala Harris and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell, Biden expressed his frustration with the misinformation circulating regarding recovery efforts. He condemned what he termed a “reckless and irresponsible” campaign of disinformation, arguing that it sows distrust among those in need of help.
Biden specifically called out Trump, accusing him of leading this charge of misinformation. He stated, “Assertions have been made that property is being confiscated. That’s simply not true.” He further challenged claims that victims of the storm were only receiving minimal cash assistance and that necessary funds were being redirected to support migrants. “What a ridiculous thing to say. It’s not true,” Biden added, emphasizing the importance of accurate information during crises.
The president went on to label some of the claims as bizarre, pointing to Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s remarks about the government supposedly controlling the weather. “In moments like this, there are no red or blue states. There’s one United States of America,” he stated, urging unity and cooperation in the face of disaster.
Meanwhile, Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has criticized the federal response to Hurricane Helene, suggesting that officials have neglected areas with Republican leadership. Biden, in an effort to foster collaboration, praised Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, describing him as “cooperative” and committed to his state’s recovery efforts.
In a tweet, Biden reassured DeSantis and Tampa Mayor Jane Castor of his administration’s support, saying, “If you need any additional resources as we prepare for Hurricane Milton to make landfall, you give me a call. We’re here for you as long as it takes.”
In these challenging times, it’s crucial for leaders to come together and focus on the well-being of all Americans, regardless of political affiliation.
