On Friday, President Joe Biden expressed his commitment to collaborate with the House’s choice for the next speaker, even in light of some candidates openly opposing his legislative agenda.
As of Friday, Representatives Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Jim Jordan (R-OH) have garnered substantial endorsements in their respective bids to succeed former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). Representative Kevin Hern (R-OK) has also shown interest in running, although he has not officially announced his candidacy.
Following McCarthy’s removal, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) suggested that former President Donald Trump should assume the role of the next speaker. Despite Trump’s willingness to temporarily accept the position if elected, current GOP rules prohibit individuals facing federal indictments from holding the office, and Trump has endorsed Jim Jordan for the position.
During a discussion about the latest jobs report on Friday, reporters asked President Biden if he had any reservations about the potential choice of House Speaker by the Republicans. In response, Biden affirmed his commitment, stating, “Regardless of who becomes the House speaker, I am determined to cooperate. They control half of Congress, and I will make every effort to collaborate. While some individuals may be more amenable to cooperation than others, my intention is to work with whomever holds the speaker’s position.”
