Biden Raises Eyebrows After Clapping During Speech

During the commencement ceremony at Morehouse College, President Joe Biden was seen clapping in response to the valedictorian’s call for an “immediate and permanent cease-fire” in Gaza.

Ahead of the graduation at Morehouse, a renowned historically Black men’s college in Atlanta, there was significant student opposition to Biden’s participation, driven by dissatisfaction with his administration’s approach to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Valedictorian DeAngelo Fletcher delivered a fervent speech, openly expressing his views on the ongoing conflict. “From the comforts of our homes, we have witnessed the grief of countless civilians mourning the loss of their loved ones and demanding the release of all hostages,” Fletcher stated. “For the first time, we hear a unified global outcry transcending language and culture. As a Morehouse man, and more importantly, as a human being, I advocate for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza.”

Biden’s applause was echoed by many graduates, who also cheered Fletcher’s remarks. “Listen to the voices worldwide calling for righteous justice,” Fletcher concluded.

The ceremony highlighted a clear generational divide. While many younger alumni and students questioned Biden’s invitation, older alumni and university leaders were largely supportive of his presence.

Morehouse College President David Thomas, in a recent NPR interview, emphasized his preparedness to halt the ceremony if disruptions necessitated police intervention. “I assure you, I understand their concerns. The situation in Gaza is a humanitarian crisis,” he remarked. “That’s why I’m advocating for an immediate ceasefire to halt the violence and bring the hostages home.”

The devastation and loss in Gaza have significantly impacted Biden’s popularity among young voters, many of whom are critical of his administration’s initial support for the Israeli government during the conflict.

Georgia, a crucial swing state that Biden secured in 2020, could see a shift in voter enthusiasm, particularly among young and Black voters—demographics essential for his re-election prospects.
