Biden Backstabs Israel?

The Republican Senate conference has largely united in its criticism of the Biden administration over what they are calling a “partial arms embargo” against Israel amidst ongoing conflict with Hamas. This collective stance is a reaction to recent events that have exacerbated tensions in the region.

Senator Tom Cotton from Arkansas has spearheaded the GOP’s condemnation, accusing President Biden of emboldening Israel’s adversaries. His comments come in response to a tragic Hezbollah attack on northern Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 12 children and teens. This rocket strike, which targeted a soccer field, also left 29 more children and teens injured. Senator Rand Paul from Kentucky notably did not join his colleagues in signing the letter.

The Republican senators pointed out that this attack was the deadliest in northern Israel since October 7. They also highlighted the Biden administration’s decision in May to halt the transfer of 1,800 2,000-pound bombs and 1,700 500-pound bombs to Israel. This hold was reportedly due to concerns over the use of such weapons in densely populated areas like Rafah in Gaza, where the administration was discouraging an Israeli ground invasion.

A State Department spokesperson clarified that only one shipment of 2,000-pound bombs remains paused, while other transfers are proceeding. They emphasized ongoing discussions with Israel about the appropriate use of munitions and reiterated that no other funds have been stopped.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the administration for the delay, urging Biden to provide the necessary tools to Israel to expedite their military efforts. Netanyahu expressed frustration over the withholding of weapons and ammunition during critical times.

The Republican senators argued that the administration’s actions undermine long-standing U.S.-Israel military cooperation and cast doubt on America’s reliability as an ally. They also noted that this delay contradicts the will of Congress, which had earlier approved a $95 billion foreign aid package, including assistance for Israel.

The GOP senators condemned Biden for neglecting congressional inquiries regarding the weapons shipments and warned that the administration’s delays are endangering both Israel and American servicemembers in the region. They concluded by urging the president to expedite the delivery of all approved weapons and ammunition to Israel.
